How to get squirrels out of the attic?

Small animals such as squirrels may seem very cute and harmless, however, once they have settled in a place they can cause damage and be difficult to remove. Before proceeding to do anything to remove them, you should confirm that they live there, signs such as sounds, scratches on the walls, and the presence of feces can be a sign of wildlife entering your attic. 

There are a variety of techniques to scare squirrels away on their own, however, if these techniques do not work, other means should be used to remove them. 

Among the most common home techniques are the following

• Ammonia odor: when strong odors such as ammonia or a long-lasting detergent are used, squirrels will feel uncomfortable and will want to flee.  These homemade repellents can be applied on clothes that should be placed in strategic areas and routes that the squirrel may take to enter the attic. 
• Chemical repellents: many of these repellents are predator urine scents, i.e., wolf, fox, bobcat, or other urine scents. Squirrels instinctively will not want to inhabit an area where a predator is likely to live and threaten their well-being.
• Close the holes: perhaps there are small holes in the attic where a squirrel can enter, these holes should be carefully inspected and sealed with appropriate materials, which will prevent them from entering the house.
• Cut the branches of nearby trees: squirrels by nature live in trees, the fact that they have entered the attic is perhaps because they consider that it is safer; they can store their food and shelter from any danger in there, but this does not mean that they will stop living in trees, in fact, many of them still live in them, but they prefer to nest and store food in the house, where there is less risk of losing it. 

For this reason, observing tree branches that connect to the attic is important in determining the entrances. Once the branches that act as a bridge between the two points have been identified, they should be cut. This may stop squirrels from entering. 

• Light: illuminating the attic will help decrease the squirrels’ expectation of the perfect place to settle, the electric light will make them question if the environment is inhabited, and they will leave once their well-being is disturbed by the continuous illumination. 
• Sounds: many people place a radio in the attic, preferably tuned to a talk show, this will allow the squirrels to hear human voices and instinctively seek to move away. 
• Traps: If none of the above methods worked, it is time to remove the squirrels yourself. Using squirrel traps should not be a job to be taken lightly, first of all you should consult the regulations for the use of traps and the places where you will have to remove the wildlife once trapped. 
• Use a bait: to proceed to place traps and that these play the role assigned to them in a correct way, an attractant for squirrels, in this case, food, must be placed inside the trap. Nuts, corn, some fruit, or food that is usually part of the squirrels’ diet can be used.
